Methodology

This page explains exactly what the calculator does with the numbers you enter, so you can check our working rather than take it on faith.

    Tax years covered

The calculator supports FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28, current), FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), and FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26). Budget 2026 retained the FY 2025-26 slabs, new-regime standard deduction, and Section 87A rebate unchanged for FY 2026-27, so those two years use identical calculation rules — only the labelled year differs. Slab rates, standard deduction, and rebate thresholds are applied per the year you select; FY 2024-25 uses different figures throughout.

New regime slabs, FY 2026-27 (and FY 2025-26)

    0% up to ₹4L, 5% from ₹4–8L, 10% from ₹8–12L, 15% from ₹12–16L, 20% from ₹16–20L, 25% from ₹20–24L, 30% above ₹24L. Standard deduction: ₹75,000 (salaried only). Section 87A rebate: up to ₹60,000, for taxable income up to ₹12L.

    Old regime slabs

0% up to ₹2.5L, 5% from ₹2.5–5L, 20% from ₹5–10L, 30% above ₹10L (higher thresholds apply for senior and super-senior citizens). Standard deduction: ₹50,000. Section 87A rebate: up to ₹12,500, for taxable income up to ₹5L. The old regime also allows deductions under 80C, 80D, 80TTA, 80G, home loan interest, and NPS contributions, each capped per the relevant section.

    Surcharge and cess

Surcharge applies above ₹50L of taxable income (10% to 15% to 25%, capped at 25% under the new regime for FY 2026-27 and FY 2025-26 even above ₹5 crore). A 4% Health and Education Cess is applied on tax plus surcharge, on top of the final figure.

    What we don't do

We don't file returns, store your data, or give personalised tax advice. The calculator is a general-purpose estimator — your actual liability can differ based on details it doesn't capture (capital gains treatment, specific exemption eligibility, TDS already deducted, and so on). Always confirm with the Income Tax Department or a qualified professional before filing.

    Keeping this current

Slabs and rebate figures are updated when the Union Budget changes them. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change to the calculation logic.
